Why Elope in Maui

Why Maui Is the Most Romantic Place to Elope in Hawaii

Eloping in Hawai'i is about more than saying “I do” — it’s about starting your marriage surrounded by raw beauty, tropical warmth, and the slow rhythm of life. Maui offers some of the most breathtaking elopement locations in the world — from the golden beaches of Wailea and Makena Cove to the lush waterfalls of Hana and the epic sunrise views at Haleakalā. Whether you dream of an intimate barefoot ceremony on the sand or an adventurous cliffside vow exchange, eloping in Maui lets you celebrate your love in a way that feels real, relaxed, and completely you. As a local Maui elopement photographer, I help couples plan unforgettable Hawaii elopement experiences — guiding you through permits, timelines, and the best hidden gems so your day flows effortlessly and every photo tells your story.

WHEN TO START PLANNING YOUR MAUI ELOPEMENT

 (And yes, it’s okay if you’re last-minute!)

Ideally, planning your Maui elopement 4–6 months in advance gives us the best shot at securing your dream location, your ideal date, and all the fun extras like permits, florals, and travel deals. BUT — if you're feeling spontaneous, don’t stress. As a Maui Elopement photographer, I’ve helped couples pull off epic “we’re getting married next month” adventures too! Whether you’re Type A or totally winging it, I’ll meet you where you’re at and help make it smooth, simple, and fun from the very beginning.

Best Time of Year to Elope in Maui

Sunshine, swells, and sweet island vibes—season by season.

The best time to elope in Maui is April through October, when the island’s weather is warm, dry, and the ocean is calm — perfect for golden sunset photos and barefoot beach ceremonies. Maui’s winter months (November to March) bring a little more rain and bigger surf on the north shores, but they also mean lush waterfalls and quieter beaches for a more private elopement experience. No matter the season, Maui offers breathtaking light, year-round tropical beauty, and incredible diversity — from Haleakalā’s sunrise views to Makena Cove’s soft pastel sunsets. As a Maui elopement photographer, I help couples choose the best time of year and location for their Hawaii elopement based on lighting, tides, and weather, so every moment feels effortless and unforgettable.

SPRING (MARCH - MAY)

Lush, blooming, and perfect for adventurers

From March to May, the island is bursting with vibrant greens, gentle trade winds, and fewer crowds — giving you those dreamy, uncrowded beaches and glowing sunsets Maui is known for. The weather is warm but not too hot, making it perfect for a relaxed, romantic ceremony or adventurous hike elopement. As your Maui elopement photographer, I love spring for its soft light, clear ocean blues, and peaceful island vibe — everything you need for effortless, breathtaking photos.

SUMMER (JUNE-AUGUST)

Sunniest skies and warm ocean days

Summer in Maui is perfect for couples dreaming of golden sunsets, long daylight hours, and warm tropical evenings. From June through August, the island offers calm ocean conditions, crystal-clear water, and vibrant skies — ideal for adventurous Maui elopements on the beach or along the cliffs. It’s also one of the best seasons for underwater or snorkeling-inspired elopement photos thanks to Maui’s incredible visibility. As your Maui elopement photographer, I’ll help you find the best spots and timing to avoid crowds while capturing that glowing summer light that makes Hawaii elopements so magical.

Fall (September – November)

Golden light, mellow crowds, and magic everywhere

Fall in Maui is calm, golden, and effortlessly romantic. From September to November, the beaches are quieter, the sunsets deeper in color, and the ocean warm and glassy. Palm trees sway in soft trade winds while the island glows in golden light — perfect for intimate Maui elopements. As your Maui elopement photographer, I love this season for its peaceful energy, dreamy sunsets, and the sense that Maui feels completely yours.

Winter (December – February)

Dramatic skies, lush landscapes, and big wave energy

Winter in Maui brings cooler breezes, lush green landscapes, and the magic of whale season, when humpback whales migrate through the warm Hawaiian waters. From December to February, the island feels alive — with dramatic waves on the north shore, misty mornings in Upcountry, and golden sunsets along the calm beaches of Wailea and Makena. It’s an incredible time to elope in Maui if you love rich colors, cozy moments, and the chance to spot whales breaching in the distance during your ceremony. As your Maui elopement photographer, I’ll help you capture that dreamy winter light and every unforgettable island detail.

HOW TO GET TO MAUI:

Flights, rental cars, and everything you need to know.- rooted in story, connection, and truth.

Getting to Maui is easier than you think — and absolutely worth every mile! You’ll fly into Kahului Airport (OGG), the island’s main airport located on the north shore of central Maui. There are direct flights to Maui from major U.S. cities like Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Phoenix — or you can easily connect through Honolulu with quick inter-island flights through Hawaiian Airlines & Southwest Airlines, running daily.

Once you land, you’ll want to rent a car to explore freely — Maui is spread out, and public transportation or Uber can be limited, especially for secluded elopement spots. A compact SUV is perfect for navigating scenic drives like the Road to Hana, reaching beach ceremony locations in Wailea, or chasing golden sunsets in Lahaina with all your wedding gear in tow.

How to Get to Kauai from the Mainland

Turo vs. Traditional Rentals

Turo is like Airbnb for cars, and it’s an amazing way to get around while also supporting local families. Many of the cars on Turo are owned by Maui residents, so your rental fee goes directly into the pockets of locals rather than big corporate rental companies. It’s a small but meaningful way to give back to the community you’re visiting.

Pro tips for using Turo on Maui:

-Book early- (as soon as you book flights, especially for summer and holidays).

-Check if the host offers airport pickup — many will meet you curbside at Kahalui Airport, which saves time.

-Choose a compact SUV if you plan to drive to beach access roads or carry wedding gear. A 4WD isn’t necessary unless you’re doing serious off-road exploring (and many unpaved roads are restricted to rentals anyway).

-Double-check insurance — Turo offers its own coverage, but check if your personal car insurance or credit card already covers rentals.
Book early (as soon as you book flights, especially for summer and holidays).

- Better availability: Especially during peak seasons when traditional rental companies sell out.

-Unique options: You get the exact car as pictured- Jeeps, convertibles, and SUVs that are perfect for adventure elopements.

-Convenience: Many hosts will deliver the car to the airport or your Airbnb.

I also help my couples with travel logistics — from recommending the best places to stay nearby to planning what time to fly in for a stress-free elopement day.

Pro tip: Book flights and your car early, especially during peak seasons (summer + holidays). I’m happy to help guide you through the travel logistics — from where to stay nearby to what time you should fly in for a stress-free elopement day.

Best Places to Stay in Maui for Your Elopement

Airbnbs > hotels — for privacy, vibes, venue dupes & photo magic

Let’s be real — hotels can feel a little... generic. For elopements, I always recommend Airbnbs or VRBOs over resorts. Why? They offer way more privacy, room to breathe, and photogenic charm that actually fits the vibe of your day. On top of that, it gives more opportunities to support locals as well! Whether you're sipping coffee on a jungle-view lanai or getting ready in a boho beach bungalow, your space becomes part of your story. Plus, they make for dreamy “getting ready” photos — no beige carpeted hotel rooms here!

BEST PLACES TO ELOPE IN MAUI:

Maui is so unique & overflowing with breathtaking places to elope — but not all of them are legally permitted for ceremonies. So let’s break it down: First, you’ll find a list of approved spots where you can legally say “I do” with the right permit (don’t worry, I help with that!). Then, we’ll dive into the wild, iconic locations where we can head after the vows for dreamy portraits, adventure sessions, or just quiet time to soak it all in. Whether you're into jungle, beach, cliffs, or waterfalls — Kauai's got you.

Makena Cove (Secret Cove) – Wailea

Tucked behind lava rocks on Maui’s south shore, Makena Cove is a dream spot for an intimate beach elopement. With turquoise water, soft sand, and dramatic black lava formations, it’s one of the most photographed elopement locations in Maui — perfect for sunrise or sunset ceremonies.

Po‘olenalena Beach – Wailea

This spacious beach is a local favorite for elopements because it’s permit-approved, easy to access, and rarely crowded. Po‘olenalena offers soft sand, lava rock formations, and glowing sunset light — ideal for intimate Maui beach weddings with epic views.
Bonus: After your ceremony, we can wander the cliffside trail for epic portraits overlooking the ocean or kick off your shoes and run into the waves together — the photos (and memories) are pure magic.

Haleakalā National Park – Upcountry Maui

If you’re craving adventure, Haleakalā is one of the most unforgettable places to elope in Hawaii. You’ll need a special use permit from the National Park Service, but it’s worth it for those sunrise-above-the-clouds vows or moody volcanic landscapes that feel otherworldly.
Bonus: After your vows, we can grab some barefoot photos in the tide pools or head to one of the nearby palm groves for those classic, tropical Hawaii shots you’ll treasure forever.

Ironwoods Beach (Oneloa Beach) – Kapalua

Ironwoods Beach is one of the most dramatic and beautiful Maui elopement spots. It’s DLNR-permitted, known for its golden sand, coastal cliffs, and wide-open views. The cliffs make for amazing post-ceremony portraits — just time it for that dreamy Maui golden hour.
Bonus: After the ceremony, you can wade into the water for playful portraits or stroll under the rows of ironwood trees that line the shore — it’s the perfect mix of tropical beauty and intimate seclusion.

Legal ceremony spots + epic locations for adventure portraits

Wailea Beach – South Maui

Located near luxury resorts but still peaceful, Wailea Beach is fully DLNR-permitted and perfect for couples wanting a soft-sand ceremony with easy access to dinner or sunset celebrations afterward. It’s ideal for relaxed yet elegant Maui elopements.
Bonus: After you say “I do,” you can wander out along the tide pools or share a champagne toast with the ocean breeze — it’s the perfect mix of relaxed and romantic.

DT Fleming Beach Park – Kapalua

DT Fleming Beach offers a wide, palm-fringed shoreline and is another permit-approved Maui location. It’s beautiful in the mornings for softer light and less wind, and has a natural, untouched vibe that feels authentically Hawaiian.
Bonus: After your vows, we can capture playful portraits in the shallow tide pools or wander through the nearby tree groves for a tropical, woodsy backdrop — giving you a variety of looks all in one spot.

Palauea Beach, often called White Rock Beach, is one of Maui’s most peaceful and photogenic elopement locations — and it’s fully DLNR-permitted for weddings. This hidden gem in Wailea offers soft, golden sand, gentle turquoise waves, and fewer crowds than nearby resort beaches. It’s the perfect spot for couples craving a quiet, romantic ceremony surrounded by palm trees and ocean views. The sunsets here are absolutely breathtaking, and the beach’s long shoreline gives plenty of space for photos that capture that glowing Maui light. As your Maui elopement photographer, I love Palauea for its calm energy, natural beauty, and intimate feel that make every elopement feel effortless and authentic.

 Quick Note on Permits-

Any ceremony on state land (like beaches or parks) requires a permit.
I take care of this for you, making it one less thing to stress about!

What To Pack For Your Maui Elopement

What to Pack for Your Kauai Elopement

Maui is wild, beautiful, and a tiny bit unpredictable — which makes packing smart essential. Besides your wedding outfits, make sure to bring comfy shoes for exploring, a lightweight jacket for those misty mountain mornings, and reef-safe sunscreen (Hawaii bans the toxic kind!). If you're hiking to your ceremony spot, think layers and breathable fabrics. Quick-dry towels, bug spray, and a reusable water bottle will be your best friends. Don’t forget your marriage license, vow books, rings, and any special heirlooms or details you want captured.

A few extra things that make a big difference:

For a full checklist, I’ll send you a personalized packing guide once we lock in your date — so you can focus on the adventure and let me handle the logistics.

Do We Need a Permit to Elope in Maui?

Yes — any wedding or elopement ceremony held on a beach or state land in Hawaiʻi requires a permit from the State of Hawaiʻi. This isn’t just red tape — it’s how the state protects sacred spaces, manages crowds, and makes sure that we’re celebrating responsibly on the islands.

The Permit Process for Eloping on Maui

Who Handles the Permit?

That’s where I come in. I take care of the entire permit process for you, so you don’t have to stress about paperwork, government websites, or deadlines. As your photographer and guide, I’ll file the application, secure the location, and make sure everything is approved in advance of your day.

How It Works

  • Once you choose your ceremony location, I apply directly through Hawaiʻi’s online permit system.

  • Permits are usually approved quickly, but I make sure to request them well in advance.

  • The permit fee is small (usually around $20–30), and it’s already factored into my packages so you don’t have to worry about hidden costs.

  • On your wedding day, I’ll have the printed permit in hand in case anyone asks — you can simply relax and enjoy your vows.

Why It Matters

Getting the proper permit ensures your ceremony is both legal and respectful of the ʻāina (the land). It also gives you peace of mind, knowing that your elopement is fully authorized and protected.

Ready to start planning your Maui elopement? I’d love to guide you through every step — from permits to timelines to finding the perfect beach.

How to Legally Elope in Maui

Eloping in Maui is a dream — but it’s also important to make sure your marriage is recognized as legal. Don’t worry, the process is straightforward, and I’ll walk you through exactly what you need to do.

Step 1: Apply for Your Marriage License

That’s it! The process is simple, stress-free, and I’ll guide you through each step so you can focus on the fun part — getting married in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Ready to start planning?

All couples must apply for a Hawaiʻi marriage license. This can be done online through the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Health website. You’ll fill out a quick application, pay the $65 license fee, and then schedule a time to meet with a licensed marriage license agent on the island.
Your ceremony must be performed by a licensed officiant in Hawaiʻi. Whether you’d like a traditional Hawaiian blessing, a simple legal exchange of vows, or something more personal, I’ll connect you with trusted officiants who fit your vision.
Both of you will need to meet in person with a marriage license agent in Maui to show your IDs, confirm your information, and pick up your license. This step must be completed before your ceremony. Don’t worry — there are plenty of agents across the island, and I can help point you to the closest one to where you’re staying.

Step 2: Meet with a Marriage License Agent

Step 3: Choose a Licensed Officiant

Step 4: Secure Your Permit (For Beach/State Land Ceremonies)

If your ceremony is taking place on a beach or state land, a permit is required. The good news? I handle the permit process for you. I’ll apply, secure approval, and bring the printed permit on your wedding day so you don’t have to stress about a thing.

Step 5: Celebrate and Make it Official!!!

On your wedding day, your officiant will conduct the ceremony and file your marriage electronically with the State of Hawaiʻi. After it’s processed, you’ll receive your legal marriage certificate, typically within a few weeks.

What made Brittany and Cade's day so special is that it combined both intimate, slow moments leading up to their ceremony with fun and romantic moments on the beach. Their elopement was proof that you can keep things simple and personal while also experiencing and sharing it with your closest friends and family.

If you’re searching for how to elope in Maui, think of it this way: your day doesn’t need to follow a script. It can be a sunrise ceremony with a brunch reception, an all-day adventure with a helicopter tour, or a golden-hour beach vow exchange followed by a sail along the Maui Coast

As a Maui elopement photographer, I get to witness couples create the most unforgettable days in one of the world’s most beautiful places. Cade and Brittany wanted their elopement to reflect who they are: adventurous, laid-back, and surrounded by stunning Hawaiian landscapes. If you’ve been wondering how to elope in Maui and what a real timeline looks like, here’s a peek into their day.

Lets create a masterpiece together

  • 6:15 pm Ceremony Begins —Right after the pre-ceremony shoot, we flowed seamlessly and effortlessly into their maui elopement ceremony as their closest friends gathered around.

  • 6:30 pm Sunset Shots- We flowed right into sunset shots and candid moments as the ceremony wrapped up and they signed their marriage certificates

  • 7:00 PM- Head To Dinner Reservations- Brittany and Cade made private dinner reservations nearby in Wailea to end their romantic Maui elopement day with their close friends. Their day was intimate and slow paced, intentional and relaxed.

When couples ask me how to elope in Maui, I always remind them that planning your dream day here is about more than just beautiful views. It’s about honoring the ʻāina (land) and Hawaiian culture. As your Maui elopement photographer, I’ll guide you through locations, permits, and traditions in a way that keeps your celebration meaningful and respectful.

How to Respect the Land and Culture When You Elope in Maui

Respect in Maui means more than just following the rules—it’s about practicing Leave No Trace principles, staying on designated trails, and making mindful choices that ensure Maui's beaches, mountains, and waterfalls remain unspoiled for generations. Do your best to take care of the land because it takes care of the people.

Respecting the Land & Culture While Eloping in Maui

Supporting local vendors and artisans is another way to give back. Choosing Maui- based florists, musicians, and officiants not only enhances your day but also sustains the community that makes your Maui elopement possible. Incorporating Hawaiian traditions—whether that’s through an officiant who understands protocol or learning a few phrases in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language)—adds respect and depth to your celebration, while educating and keeping the Hawaiian culture alive that is needed in our world today.

By caring for the ocean and land, valuing the culture, and honoring the people, you’re not just creating a beautiful elopement—you’re becoming part of Maui's story in a way that leaves a positive impact.

"When my husband and I eloped in Hawaii, I wanted to find a photographer who could truly capture these special moments. After Melly was recommended to me, I looked through her portfolio and instantly fell in love with her work—her editing style was exactly what I had envisioned. Despite the 6-hour time difference, Melly made the entire planning process effortless. Through FaceTime calls, texts, and thoughtful suggestions—including potential locations, flower vendors, and examples from past sessions—she helped us bring our vision to life. My husband isn’t usually the biggest fan of being in front of the camera, but Melly made us both feel so comfortable! She has the sweetest soul, and I would wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone looking for an elopement photographer on the Big Island. The memories she captured are ones we’ll cherish forever."

"Melly communicated very well, and was very flexible and understanding. She’s very friendly, and makes sure to connect before taking photo’s so that it’s not awkward. It honestly felt like a friend of mine was the photographer. She even managed to get some photos of me and my spouse with our 6 month old in her arms! She was sure to ask if she got all the photos we had in mind, and even backtracked to take photos in an area I seen when we came in. She’s a great photographer and 100% worth it."

I get nervous in front of a camera sometimes and feel very awkward but Melly made sure to make me laugh and encourage me to just have fun and be myself.
